2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Woodville completed the 2016 season with a 5-6 record. With their 3-3 region record and a third place finish in Class 1A region six, the Panthers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Woodville's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Hubbertville by a score of 47-15. No team at Woodville ever won more games in a season than the five victories last year. The Panthers have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2017. Since 2010, the Woodville football program has struggled with a record of 15-57. Over the past 11 seasons, Woodville has not won much with a record of 17-95. Their 15.0% winning percentage ranks 57th in Class 1A and 380th in the AHSAA. The Panthers have struggled on the football field with no winning seasons during this time. The Panthers are led by head coach Jay Powell who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 12-20 over the past three seasons at Woodville. Under his direction the Panthers have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Powell. Coach Powell's overall record as a head football coach in three season stands at 12-20 (37.5%). The Woodville Panthers will play in Class 1A region six during the 2017 season. The Panthers will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region six this season. The Panthers open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Asbury on Friday, September 1. Last year the Asbury Rams finished with an overall record of 0-10 and in eighth place in Class 2A region six. The Rams closed out the regular season with a loss to Southeastern by a score of 39-7. Woodville and Asbury have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 3-1-0 record against the Rams.
