2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Ranburne finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Ranburne finished sixth in Class 2A region five with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Ranburne took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2012. The Bulldogs lost as many games as in any season since 2009. The defense allowed a team record 354 points last season. The Bulldogs hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just two games which followed a 10-2 record in 2015. Ranburne was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Bulldogs want to be competitive. They only averaged 17.4 points a game. Ranburne struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 35.4 points a game. Since 2010, Ranburne has gone a combined 49-28. Their 64.0% winning percentage ranks 11th in Class 2A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Ranburne has managed to compile a record of 142-123. Their 54.0% winning percentage ranks 17th in Class 2A and 143rd in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs are led by head coach Stephen Bailey who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 2-8 record in his first season at Ranburne. The Bulldogs have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Bailey. Coach Bailey's overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 2-8 (20.0%). The Ranburne Bulldogs will play in Class 2A region five during the 2017 season. The Bulldogs have one of the toughest schedules in Class 2A. Their opponents had a combined record of 65-49 last season. That ranks 2nd in Class 2A and 47th in the AHSAA. It will be an uphill battle for the Bulldogs if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region five this season. After just 2 wins last year, Ranburne will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. Senior Sam Calvert returns after rushing for 486 yards on 113 carries and scoring 5 touchdowns. Senior Aaron Benefield also returns after rushing for 450 yards on 91 carries and scoring 7 touchdowns. Senior Landon Woodard returns after catching 22 passes for 351 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Bulldogs open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Mount Zion GA on Friday, August 25. Ranburne and Mount Zion GA have met a total of 41 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 31-9-1 record against Mount Zion GA. They last met in 2016 with Mount Zion GA winning by a score of 47-0. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
