2017 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Talladega finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Talladega finished sixth in Class 5A region four with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Tigers have not qualified for the playoffs since the 1995 season and would love to end that streak this year. They have never won a playoff game in the school's history. Talladega was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Tigers want to be competitive. They only averaged 17.8 points a game. Since 2010, the Talladega football program has struggled with a record of 16-52. Over the past 25 seasons, Talladega has not won much with a record of 62-190. Their 25.0% winning percentage ranks 57th in Class 5A and 366th in the AHSAA. The Tigers have struggled on the football field with only three winning seasons during this time. Their last winning season was 1994. Robert Herring Jr. leaves Talladega after struggling to find a way to turn around a perennial losing football program. His four teams went a combined 10-28 and failed to reach the playoffs in any season. Ted Darby spent last year as an assistant at Talladega and will lead the program in 2017 as the head football coach. He has 20 years of coaching experience and was the head coach at Fayetteville in 2000 where his team finished 0-9. Coach Darby will try to do something the last six coaches at Taladega were unable to accomplish. Finish a season with a winning record. The last time Talladega won more games than they lost was back in 1994. The last time Talladega won a playoff games was, well never. They are 0-7 in the playoffs and have not reached the post season wince 1995. The Talladega Tigers will play in Class 5A region four during the 2017 season. It will be an uphill battle for the Tigers if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region four this season. The Tigers open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Alexandria on Friday, August 25 at Lou Scales Stadium. Last year the Alexandria Valley Cubs finished with an overall record of 5-4 and in fifth place in Class 5A region seven. Talladega and Alexandria have met a total of 13 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 6-7-0 record against the Valley Cubs. They last met in 1962 with Talladega winning by a score of 20-12. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Hazlewood won an amazing seventeen consecutive region championships from 1986-2002.
