 2018 Preview 


       Austin completed the 2017 season with a 12-1 record. The Black Bears cruised through the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record going into the post season. Last year Austin captured the region eight title and a number one seed in the Class 6A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. Austin lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Pinson Valley team by a score of 51-50.

       The Black Bears won as many games as in any season since 1983. The 591 points scored by the Black Bears last year were a team record in a single season.

       The high-scoring Austin offense ranked 6th in the AHSAA. They averaged 45.5 points a game.

       Over the past two seasons the Black Bears have gone 22-5 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Austin has gone a combined 71-44. Their 62.0% winning percentage ranks 13th in Class 7A over the past eight seasons.

       Over the past 29 seasons, Austin has managed to compile a record of 140-134. Their 51.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 7A and 183rd in the AHSAA.




       The Black Bears are led by head coach Jeremy Perkins who is entering his ninth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 57-36 over the past eight seasons at Austin. Under his direction the Black Bears have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times. They have won two region crowns with Coach Perkins.

       Coach Perkins' overall record as a head football coach in eight season stands at 57-36 (61.3%).

       The Austin Black Bears will play in Class 7A region four during the 2018 season. The Black Bears move up in classification to Class 7A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move.

       The Black Bears enter the 2018 season riding a 10 game regular season winning streak.

       The Black Bears should be considered one of the favorites for the region four championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

       The Black Bears open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Hartselle on Friday, August 24 at J.P. Cain Stadium. Last year the Hartselle Tigers finished with an overall record of 6-4 and in fifth place in Class 6A region eight.

       Austin and Hartselle have met a total of 57 times on the football field. The Black Bears have a 24-32-1 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2017 with Austin winning by a score of 28-6.

       Austin returns 6A All-State  defensive back Reddy Steward. He was named to the first team last season.

Bart Starr received coaching from Kentucky great Babe Parilli his senior season at Sidney Lanier in hopes of joining Bear Bryant at Kentucky. He had to settle for Alabama.
