 2018 Preview

Fyffe completed the 2017 season with a 12-1 record. The Red Devils cruised through the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record going into the post season. Last year Fyffe captured the region six title and a number one seed in the Class 2A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. Fyffe lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Sulligent team by a score of 35-28.

The high-scoring Fyffe offense ranked 3rd in the AHSAA. They averaged 49.0 points a game.

The Red Devils defense dominated most opponents as they ranked 4th in the AHSAA. The defense gave up just 7.8 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Red Devils have gone 27-1 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Fyffe has gone a combined 98-9. Their 92.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 2A over the past eight seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Fyffe has gone a combined 237-61. Their 80.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 2A and 5th in the AHSAA. The Red Devils have been successful on the football field with twenty-three winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 1996.

The Red Devils are led by head coach Paul Benefield who is entering his twenty-second season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 222-42 over the past twenty-one seasons at Fyffe. Under his direction the Red Devils have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty times. They have won thirteen region crowns with Coach Benefield. Coach Benefield has won two state championships at Fyffe, the last coming in 2016.

Coach Benefield's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-six season stands at 267-53 (83.4%). His 267 wins rank 7th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Benefield's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-four times and won fifteen region championships. He has a 41-22 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches.

The Fyffe Red Devils will play in Class 2A region eight during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Red Devils remain in 2A but move from region six over to region eight. The Red Devils have one of the toughest schedules in Class 2A. Their opponents had a combined record of 62-48 last season. That ranks 4th in Class 2A and 79th in the AHSAA.

The Red Devils enter the 2018 season riding a 28 game regular season winning streak. They have won 23 straight games on their home turf at Long-Ridgeway Stadium.

While most teams rebuild during the off season, Fyffe has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Red Devils enter the season with expectations of not only a region title but reaching the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region eight and could very well be representing the North in the Class 2A title game. The Red Devils have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2000 and this year should be no exception.

The Red Devils open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Geraldine on Friday, August 31 at Long-Ridgeway Stadium. Last year the Geraldine Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 4-7 and in fourth place in Class 3A region seven. The Bulldogs lost in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs to Piedmont by a score of 26-6.

Fyffe and Geraldine have met a total of 82 times on the football field. The Red Devils have a 45-35-2 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2017 with Fyffe winning by a score of 33-0.

Fyffe returns 2A All-State  running back Payton Anderson. He was named to the first team last season.
