 2018 Preview

Piedmont completed the 2017 season with a 12-2 record. Last year Piedmont captured the region five title and a number one seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. Piedmont made a nice playoff run in 2017, reaching the semi-finals before falling to a very good Randolph County team by the score of 35-28.

Over the past two seasons the Bulldogs have gone 27-2 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Piedmont has gone a combined 95-13. Their 88.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 3A over the past eight seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Piedmont has managed to compile a record of 198-111. Their 64.0% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 3A and 61st in the AHSAA. Their last losing season was 2004.

The Bulldogs are led by head coach Steve Smith who is entering his thirteenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 135-25 over the past twelve seasons at Piedmont. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs a total of twelve times. They have won six region crowns with Coach Smith. Coach Smith has won three state championships at Piedmont, the last coming in 2016.

Coach Smith's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-three season stands at 220-70 (75.9%). His 220 wins rank 9th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Smith's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-two times and won twelve region championships. He has a 41-19 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches.

The Piedmont Bulldogs will play in Class 3A region six during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Bulldogs remain in 3A but move from region five over to region six. The Bulldogs have one of the toughest schedules in Class 3A. Their opponents had a combined record of 65-52 last season. That ranks 7th in Class 3A and 71st in the AHSAA.

The Bulldogs enter the 2018 season riding a 9 game regular season winning streak.

While most teams rebuild during the off season, Piedmont has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Bulldogs should be considered one of the favorites for the region six championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Bulldogs are making another deep run into the playoffs. The Bulldogs have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2005 and expect to be included again when November rolls around.

The Bulldogs open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Addison on Friday, August 31 at A.G. Hicks Stadium. Last year the Addison Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 10-3 and in second place in Class 1A region seven. The Bulldogs lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 1A playoffs to South Lamar by a score of 34-20.

Piedmont and Addison have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 2-0-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in with

Piedmont returns 3A All-State  defensive back Kaedon Jenkins. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. The Bulldogs also return  defensive lineman Matthew Thornton. He was named to the second team.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

The Tuscaloosa Black Bears were considered one of the best programs in the nation from 1925-1931. Their record over that span was an amazing 61-0-3.
