 2018 Preview

Section completed the 2017 season with a 4-6 record. Last year Section finished sixth in Class 2A region six with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Lions have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2007 season and would love to end that streak this year.

Since 2010, Section has gone a combined 27-53. Their 34.0% winning percentage ranks 46th in Class 2A over the past eight seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Section has managed to compile a record of 99-149. Their 40.0% winning percentage ranks 43rd in Class 2A and 281st in the AHSAA.

The Lions are led by head coach Luke Powell who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 4-6 record in his first season at Section. The Lions saw improvement from a 1-9 record the season before coach Powell arrived. The Lions have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Powell.

Coach Powell's overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 4-6 (40.0%).

The Section Lions will play in Class 2A region eight during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Lions remain in 2A but move from region six over to region eight.

It will be an uphill battle for the Lions if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region eight this season.

The Lions open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent New Hope on Friday, August 31 at Section Stadium. Last year the New Hope Indians finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in sixth place in Class 3A region seven. The Indians closed out the regular season with a loss to Midfield by a score of 44-7.

Section and New Hope have met a total of 14 times on the football field. The Lions have a 6-8-0 record against the Indians. They last met in 1999 with Section winning by a score of 21-14.
