 2018 Preview 


       Woodville completed the 2017 season with a 4-6 record. With their 2-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 1A region six, the Panthers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Woodville's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Hackleburg by a score of 49-19.

       The Panthers have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2018.

       Woodville was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Panthers want to be competitive. They only averaged 16.6 points a game.

       Since 2010, the Woodville football program has struggled with a record of 19-63.

       Over the past 12 seasons, Woodville has not won much with a record of 21-101. Their 17.0% winning percentage ranks 59th in Class 1A and 378th in the AHSAA. The Panthers have struggled on the football field with no winning seasons during this time.




       The Panthers are led by head coach Jay Powell who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 16-26 over the past four seasons at Woodville. Under his direction the Panthers have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Powell.

       Coach Powell's overall record as a head football coach in four season stands at 16-26 (38.1%).

       The Woodville Panthers will play in Class 1A region seven during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Panthers remain in 1A but move from region six over to region seven.

       With a little luck and some improvement, the Panthers could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region seven this season.

       The Panthers open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Waterloo on Friday, August 24. Last year the Waterloo Cougars finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fourth place in Class 1A region eight. The Cougars lost in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs to Cedar Bluff by a score of 33-28.

       Woodville and Waterloo have met a total of 6 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 2-4-0 record against the Cougars. They last met in 2015 with Woodville winning by a score of 45-0.
