1956 West End vs. Woodlawn

The 1956 Woodlawn Colonels would complete the season with a perfect 10-0 record by claiming the Birmingham News State Championship Trophy for class AAA.

The team had finished a perfect 10-0 season in 1955 and now claimed back-to-back State Titles. In 1956 the Colonels outscored their opponents 219-26 under third year head coach Kenny Morgan.

Woodlawn and West End squared off at Legion Field on October 12th with the Colonels coming away with a not so surprising 46-7 victory.

Woodlawn dominated the series in the 1950s winning every contest before West End broke the string in 1962.

Jack Rutledge starred at fullback for the Colonels and was named all-state along with their two tackles Benny Shepherd and Bob Patrick.
