The Foley vs. Robertsdale rivalry is the most lopsided in the state. Foley
has completely dominated the series that began in 1925 with a record of
75-15-6.
Between 1954-68 Foley won 15
games in a row. The Lions won thirty-one of thirty-three games between
1954-1987. The longest winning streak for the Golden Bears sits at two
games. Foley has won the past eleven games in the series. During the latest
run, none of the games were close.
The schools are about ten miles
apart and have played every season since 1925 except 1927 and 1932.
Having grown up in Foley I know the importance of this game each season. If
the Lions have a good year and lose to Robertsdale, it was not a good year
at all. Beating the Golden Bears is compared to beating up on your little
brother. But lose to them and life can be miserable for the next year.
A former coach told me
once that following a loss to Robertsdale, the cheerleaders mailed him a box
filled with, shall we say, women's undergarments. It is something he
remembers to this day.
The biggest win during
the series for the Golden Bears likely came during the 1969 season in a 20-6
win at home against their most hated rival. The Bears would go on to one of
their finest seasons before losing to Sylacauga in the state finals of the
playoffs.
