Hazlewood of Town Creek and Courtland are located just five miles apart in Lawrence County. Neither town has more than 1,500 residents. The Bears were Class 2A and the Chiefs 1A, but classification or school size mattered little when these two tangled. Hazlewood won the Class 2A state title a total of eleven times including five in a row between 1988-1992. Courtland won the 1A crown five times between 1988-1999. These two powerhouses dominated small school football during this time period. It was very rare for either school to lose to a school in their classification. Many years the only regular season losses came against each other. In 2002 the teams split two regular season games. It was the only loss for either. They played twice during the regular season from 2000-2005. The reason was simple. No other schools wished to have either opponent on their schedule. Most seasons both schools would schedule larger schools just to fill out a ten game slate. They won state championships in the same year in 1988, 1989 and 1990. The Bears won the regular season meetings in 1988 and 1989 while the Chiefs took the 1989 contest. Everything changed in 2008 just four years after Courtland changed their name to R.A. Hubbard. The two schools consolidated ending one of the best rivalries of all time in the state. Total Meetings: 55 Series Record: Hazlewood leads 37-18-0 Home Record: Hazlewood: 20-8-0 Courtland: 10-17-0 First Meeting: 10/26/1962, Hazlewood 20, Courtland 0 Last Meeting: 8/29/2008, Hazlewood 37, R.A.
