 2016 Preview 


       With their 4-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 6A region 5, the Lions earned a spot in the playoffs in 2015. Briarwood reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Austin by a score of 27-0.

       Averaging over ten wins a season since 2010, Briarwood has gone a combined 49-28. Their 64.0% winning percentage ranks 15th in Class 5A over the past six seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Briarwood has gone a combined 232-87. Their 73.0% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class 5A and 18th in the AHSAA.

       The Lions are led by head coach Fred Yancey who is entering his twenty-sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 243-89 over the past twenty-six seasons at Briarwood. Under his direction the Lions have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-four times. They have won fourteen region crowns with Coach Yancey.

       Coach Yancey's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-six seasons stands at 243-89 (73.2%). His 243 wins rank 5th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Yancey's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-four times and won fourteen region championships.

      

      The Briarwood Lions will play in Class 5A region 5 during the 2016 season. The Lions may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 6A to 5A. They will compete in region 5 this year.

       The Lions should contend for a playoff spot in Region 5 this season.

       The Lions open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Chelsea on Friday, August 26 at Richard Conkle Stadium. Last year the Chelsea Hornets finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in third place in Class 6A region 3. The Hornets lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to Blount by a score of 41-28.

       Briarwood and Chelsea have met a total of 34 times on the football field. The Lions have a 24-9-1 record against the Hornets. They last met in 2020 with Briarwood winning by a score of 20-3.
