2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Demopolis completed the 2015 season with a 10-3 record. Last year Demopolis captured the region four title and a number one seed in the Class 5A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. Demopolis lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good St. Pauls team by a score of 35-13. The Tigers won as many games as in any season since 2009. The defense was very stingy last season as Demopolis ranked 29th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 13.8 points a game. Since 2010, Demopolis has gone a combined 48-22. Their 69.0% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 5A over the past six seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Demopolis has gone a combined 214-82. Their 72.0% winning percentage ranks 4th in Class 5A and 20th in the AHSAA. The Tigers have been successful on the football field with twenty-three winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 1994. The Tigers are led by head coach Stacy Luker who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 10-3 record in his first season at Demopolis. The Tigers saw improvement from a 8-3 record the season before coach Luker arrived. Under his direction the Tigers have qualified for the playoffs once. They have won one region crown with Coach Luker. Coach Luker's overall record as a head football coach in twenty season stands at 181-69 (72.4%). His 181 wins rank 13th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Luker's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seventeen times and won nine region championships. He has a 42-12 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. Coach Luker won five state championships prior to arriving at Demopolis, the last coming in 2010 at Sweet Water. The Demopolis Tigers will play in Class 5A region three during the 2016 season. Following realignment, the Tigers remain in 5A but move from region four over to region three. The Tigers enter the 2016 season having won 14 straight region games. The Tigers should be considered one of the favorites for the region three championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Tigers have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 1995 and expect to be included again when November rolls around. The Tigers have put together a streak of 21 consecutive winning seasons and hope to extend that streak in 2016. The Tigers open the 2016 season on a neutral field against non-region opponent Hillcrest Tuscaloosa on Thursday, August 18 at Cramton Bowl. Last year the Hillcrest Tuscaloosa Patriots finished with an overall record of 8-4 and in second place in Class 6A region four. The Patriots lost in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs to Opelika by a score of 48-0. Demopolis and Hillcrest Tuscaloosa have met a total of 23 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 8-15-0 record against the Patriots. They last met in 2014 with Hillcrest Tuscaloosa winning by a score of 39-29.
