2016 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Southern Academy finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. The defense allowed a team record 365 points last season. The Cougars have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2010 season and would love to end that streak this year. Since 2010, the Southern Academy football program has struggled with a record of 17-45. Over the past 25 seasons, Southern Academy has managed to compile a record of 166-109. Their 60.0% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class A and 11th in the AISA. Their last winning season was 2009. The Cougars are led by head coach Jack Hazelrig who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 8-22 over the past three seasons at Southern Academy. The Cougars have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Hazelrig. Coach Hazelrig's overall record as a head football coach in five season stands at 20-32 (38.5%). Over the course of his career, Coach Hazelrig's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times . The Southern Academy Cougars will play in Class A region two during the 2016 season. Following realignment, the Cougars remain in A but move from region one over to region two. The Cougars enter the 2016 season in the middle of a 7 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. It will be an uphill battle for the Cougars if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region two this season. After just 2 wins last year, Southern Academy will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. The Cougars open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent South Montgomery Academy on Friday, August 26 at Johnston Stadium. Last year the South Montgomery Academy Raiders finished with an overall record of 0-9 and in fifth place in Class A region two. The Raiders closed out the regular season with a loss to Evangel Christian Academy by a score of 43-6. Southern Academy and South Montgomery Academy have met a total of 3 times on the football field. The Cougars have a 3-0-0 record against the Raiders. They last met in 2015 with Southern Academy winning by a score of 20-8. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
