 2018 Preview

Addison completed the 2017 season with a 10-3 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 1A region seven, the Bulldogs earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Addison lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good South Lamar team by a score of 34-20.

Over the past two seasons the Bulldogs have gone 23-4 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Addison has gone a combined 88-30. Their 75.0% winning percentage ranks 4th in Class 2A over the past eight seasons.

Over the past 29 seasons, Addison has gone a combined 218-77. Their 74.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 2A and 10th in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs have been successful on the football field with twenty-six winning seasons during this time.

The Bulldogs are led by head coach David Smothers who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 51-19 over the past six seasons at Addison. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times. They have won one region crown with Coach Smothers.

Coach Smothers' overall record as a head football coach in six season stands at 51-19 (72.9%).

The Addison Bulldogs will play in Class 2A region seven during the 2018 season. The Bulldogs move up in classification to Class 2A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move.

Overall, the region is among the weakest in the state. Qualifying for one of the playoffs spots could be a little easier.

Addison enters the 2018 season with a string of 16 consecutive wins on their home field at A.G. Hicks Stadium. The Bulldogs should be in contention for a playoff spot in region seven this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game. They have reached the playoffs every year since 2009 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2018.

The Bulldogs open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Curry on Friday, August 24 at Hudson/ORear Field. Last year the Curry Yellow Jackets finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fifth place in Class 5A region six. The Yellow Jackets closed out the regular season with a loss to Carbon Hill by a score of 44-21.

Addison and Curry have met a total of 32 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 16-14-2 record against the Yellow Jackets. They last met in 1979 with Addison winning by a score of 28-21.

Addison returns 1A All-State  offensive lineman Hayden Ray. He was named to the second team last season. The Bulldogs also return  athlete Zayne Guthrie. He was named to the first team.
