2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Appalachian finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Appalachian finished seventh in Class 1A region four with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. Appalachian was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Eagles want to be competitive. They only averaged 17.9 points a game. Appalachian struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 36.0 points a game. Since 2010, Appalachian has gone a combined 37-63. Their 37.0% winning percentage ranks 40th in Class 1A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 29 seasons, Appalachian has managed to compile a record of 107-150. Their 42.0% winning percentage ranks 31st in Class 1A and 240th in the AHSAA. The Eagles will be under the direction of new head football coach Rob Beard as they enter the 2018 season. The Appalachian Eagles will play in Class 1A region five during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Eagles remain in 1A but move from region four over to region five. This season, the Eagles will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region five. The Eagles open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Southeastern on Thursday, August 23 at James E. Carr Stadium. Last year the Southeastern Mustangs finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in seventh place in Class 1A region seven. The Mustangs ended last season on a positive note with a win over Asbury by a score of 48-12 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Appalachian and Southeastern have met a total of 11 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 6-5-0 record against the Mustangs. They last met in 2017 with Appalachian winning by a score of 21-12. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
