2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Brewer finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Brewer finished seventh in Class 6A region seven with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Patriots have not qualified for the playoffs since the 1999 season and would love to end that streak this year. They have never won a playoff game in the school's history. Brewer was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Patriots want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.5 points a game. Since 2010, the Brewer football program has struggled with a record of 15-64. Over the past 25 seasons, Brewer has not won much with a record of 59-183. Their 24.0% winning percentage ranks 60th in Class 5A and 367th in the AHSAA. The Patriots have struggled on the football field with only two winning seasons during this time. Their last winning season was 1999. The Patriots are led by head coach Geoff Walters who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 6-24 over the past three seasons at Brewer. The Patriots have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Walters. Coach Walters' overall record as a head football coach in nine season stands at 38-58 (39.6%). Over the course of his career, Coach Walters' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times and won two region championships. The Brewer Patriots will play in Class 5A region eight during the 2018 season. The Patriots may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 6A to 5A. They will compete in region eight this year. This season, the Patriots will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region eight. The Patriots open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Danville on Friday, August 31 at Smith-Owens Stadium. Last year the Danville Hawks finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in seventh place in Class 4A region eight. The Hawks ended last season on a positive note with a win over Cold Springs by a score of 21-3 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Brewer and Danville have met a total of 11 times on the football field. The Patriots have a 6-5-0 record against the Hawks. They last met in 1993 with Danville winning by a score of 27-21. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History
The Tuscaloosa Black Bears were considered one of the best programs in the nation from 1925-1931. Their record over that span was an amazing 61-0-3.
