2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Center Point finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Center Point finished seventh in Class 6A region six with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Center Point averaged scoring just 11.1 points a game. The Eagles also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 35.9 points a game. The Eagles would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 1-19 record. Since 2010, Center Point has gone a combined 32-53. Their 38.0% winning percentage ranks 43rd in Class 5A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Center Point has managed to compile a record of 110-148. Their 43.0% winning percentage ranks 43rd in Class 5A and 257th in the AHSAA. The Eagles will be under the direction of new head football coach George Bates as they enter the 2018 season. Coach George's overall record as a head football coach in six season stands at 39-30 (56.5%). Over the course of his career, Coach George's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times and won one region championship. The Center Point Eagles will play in Class 5A region five during the 2018 season. The Eagles may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 6A to 5A. They will compete in region five this year. The Eagles have one of the toughest schedules in Class 5A. Their opponents had a combined record of 73-41 last season. That ranks 1st in Class 5A and 15th in the AHSAA. This season, the Eagles will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region five. The Eagles open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Mountain Brook on Thursday, August 30 at Spartan Stadium. Last year the Mountain Brook Spartans finished with an overall record of 8-4 and in third place in Class 7A region three. The Spartans lost in the second round of the Class 7A playoffs to Thompson by a score of 34-10. Center Point and Mountain Brook have met a total of 30 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 10-19-1 record against the Spartans. They last met in 1997 with Mountain Brook winning by a score of 21-0. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
