 2018 Preview

Cherokee completed the 2017 season with a 9-4 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 1A region eight, the Indians earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Cherokee lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Pickens County team by a score of 37-8.

The Indians won as many games as in any season since 1999. The 426 points scored by the Indians last year were a team record in a single season.

The defense was very stingy last season as Cherokee ranked 50th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 14.7 points a game.

Since 2010, Cherokee has gone a combined 31-51. Their 38.0% winning percentage ranks 41st in Class 1A over the past eight seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Cherokee has managed to compile a record of 102-144. Their 42.0% winning percentage ranks 35th in Class 1A and 258th in the AHSAA.

The Indians are led by head coach Lymos McDonald who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 19-14 over the past three seasons at Cherokee. Under his direction the Indians have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach McDonald.

Coach McDonald's overall record as a head football coach in thirteen season stands at 99-54 (64.7%). Over the course of his career, Coach McDonald's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of eleven times and won three region championships. Coach McDonald won a state championship at in 1999.

Coach McDonald can top the 100 win milestone early in the season with just one more victory.

The Cherokee Indians will play in Class 1A region eight during the 2018 season.

The Indians should be in contention for a playoff spot in region eight this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game.

The Indians open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent R.A. Hubbard on Thursday, August 23 at R.A. Hubbard Stadium. Last year the R.A. Hubbard Chiefs finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in sixth place in Class 1A region seven. The Chiefs closed out the regular season with a loss to Sheffield by a score of 21-0.

Cherokee and R.A. Hubbard have met a total of 16 times on the football field. The Indians have a 6-9-1 record against the Chiefs. They last met in 2017 with Cherokee winning by a score of 34-8.
