2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Colbert Heights completed the 2017 season with a 11-2 record. With their 6-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 3A region eight, the Wildcats earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Colbert Heights lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Piedmont team by a score of 34-13. The Wildcats improved in 2017 with their first winning season since 2011. No team at Colbert Heights ever won more games in a season than the eleven victories last year. It marked the first time since the 2011 season that the Wildcats qualified for the playoffs. The Wildcats hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Leathers saw improvement as they won eleven games following a 4-6 record in 2016. The defense was very stingy last season as Colbert Heights ranked 35th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 13.5 points a game. Since 2010, Colbert Heights has gone a combined 45-40. Their 53.0% winning percentage ranks 29th in Class 3A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Colbert Heights has managed to compile a record of 122-133. Their 48.0% winning percentage ranks 33rd in Class 3A and 210th in the AHSAA. The Wildcats are led by head coach Taylor Leathers who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 15-8 over the past two seasons at Colbert Heights. Under his direction the Wildcats have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Leathers. Coach Leathers' overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 15-8 (65.2%). The Colbert Heights Wildcats will play in Class 3A region eight during the 2018 season. Overall, the region is among the weakest in the state. Qualifying for one of the playoffs spots could be a little easier. The Wildcats enter the 2018 season riding a 6 game regular season winning streak. The Wildcats should be considered one of the favorites for the region eight championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Wildcats open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Red Bay on Friday, August 24 at Tiger Stadium. Last year the Red Bay Tigers finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in fifth place in Class 2A region eight. The Tigers ended last season on a positive note with a win over Cherokee by a score of 22-14 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Colbert Heights and Red Bay have met a total of 40 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 15-25-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2017 with Colbert Heights winning by a score of 14-6. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
