 2018 Preview 


       Fairfield finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Fairfield finished sixth in Class 5A region five with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       Fairfield took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2007. The Tigers lost as many games as in any season since 2002.

       Fairfield was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Tigers want to be competitive. They only averaged 16.8 points a game.

       Since 2010, Fairfield has gone a combined 48-36. Their 57.0% winning percentage ranks 24th in Class 5A over the past eight seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Fairfield has managed to compile a record of 135-124. Their 52.0% winning percentage ranks 27th in Class 5A and 162nd in the AHSAA.




       The Tigers are led by head coach Keon Handley who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 3-7 record in his first season at Fairfield. The Tigers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Handley.

       Coach Handley's overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 4-16 (20.0%).

       The Fairfield Tigers will play in Class 5A region four during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Tigers remain in 5A but move from region five over to region four.

       It will be an uphill battle for the Tigers if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region four this season.

       The Tigers open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Jackson-Olin on Friday, August 24 at Clements Field. Last year the Jackson-Olin Mustangs finished with an overall record of 6-4 and in sixth place in Class 6A region five. The Mustangs ended last season on a positive note with a win over Fairfield by a score of 41-0 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

       Fairfield and Jackson-Olin have met a total of 18 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 6-12-0 record against the Mustangs. They last met in 2017 with Jackson-Olin winning by a score of 41-0.

       Fairfield returns 5A All-State  defensive back Damon Miller. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.
