LaFayette completed the 2017 season with a 9-3 record. With their 6-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 2A region five, the Bulldogs earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. LaFayette reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Fyffe by a score of 56-6. Over the past two seasons the Bulldogs have gone 21-4 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, LaFayette has gone a combined 43-44. Their 49.0% winning percentage ranks 31st in Class 2A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, LaFayette has managed to compile a record of 117-129. Their 48.0% winning percentage ranks 32nd in Class 2A and 213rd in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs are led by head coach James Lucas who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 28-18 over the past four seasons at LaFayette. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have won one region crown with Coach Lucas. Coach Lucas' overall record as a head football coach in eight season stands at 51-39 (56.7%). Over the course of his career, Coach Lucas' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times and won two region championships. The LaFayette Bulldogs will play in Class 2A region four during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Bulldogs remain in 2A but move from region five over to region four. The Bulldogs should be considered one of the favorites for the region four championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Bulldogs open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Handley on Friday, August 24 at Bulldog Stadium. Last year the Handley Tigers finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in sixth place in Class 4A region three. The Tigers closed out the regular season with a loss to Central Clay County by a score of 32-0. LaFayette and Handley have met a total of 43 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 13-28-2 record against the Tigers. They last met in 1999 with LaFayette winning by a score of 45-36. LaFayette returns 2A All-State defensive back JaQuavion Boston-Gaines. He was named to the first team last season. The Bulldogs also return defensive lineman Lajareon Bryant.
