Marengo completed the 2017 season with a 9-4 record. With their 5-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 1A region one, the Panthers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Marengo lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Wadley team by a score of 34-20. The Panthers won as many games as in any season since 2000. The 451 points scored by the Panthers last year were a team record in a single season. The defense was very stingy last season as Marengo ranked 15th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 10.8 points a game. Since 2010, Marengo has gone a combined 40-48. Their 46.0% winning percentage ranks 29th in Class 1A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Marengo has managed to compile a record of 132-128. Their 51.0% winning percentage ranks 24th in Class 1A and 167th in the AHSAA. The Panthers are led by head coach Eberne Myrthil who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 28-18 over the past four seasons at Marengo. Under his direction the Panthers have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Myrthil. The Panthers will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region one this season. The Panthers open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Pickens County on Friday, August 24 at Panther Stadium. Last year the Pickens County Tornados finished with an overall record of 12-3 and in first place in Class 1A region five. The Tornados lost in the Class 1A State Championship game last season when they were defeated by Sweet Water. They final score was 20-6 in the Super Seven finals in Auburn. Marengo and Pickens County have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 1-1-0 record against the Tornados. They last met in with Marengo returns 1A All-State running back Alphonzo Lewis. He was named to the second team last season. The Panthers also return defensive lineman Ronald Bouler.
