2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Shelby County finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Shelby County finished seventh in Class 5A region five with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Wildcats have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2009 season and would love to end that streak this year. Since 2010, the Shelby County football program has struggled with a record of 22-58. Over the past 25 seasons, Shelby County has managed to compile a record of 107-146. Their 42.0% winning percentage ranks 45th in Class 5A and 265th in the AHSAA. The Wildcats are led by head coach Heath Childers who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 14-26 over the past four seasons at Shelby County. The Wildcats have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Childers. Coach Childers' overall record as a head football coach in four season stands at 14-26 (35.0%). The Shelby County Wildcats will play in Class 5A region three during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Wildcats remain in 5A but move from region five over to region three. This season, the Wildcats will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region three. The Wildcats open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Childersburg on Friday, August 24 at John Cox Stadium. Last year the Childersburg Tigers finished with an overall record of 5-6 and in fourth place in Class 4A region three. The Tigers lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Andalusia by a score of 42-14. Shelby County and Childersburg have met a total of 38 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 10-28-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2003 with Shelby County winning by a score of 13-9. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
