2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Southeastern finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Southeastern finished seventh in Class 1A region seven with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. No team at Southeastern ever won more games in a season than the two victories last year. The Mustangs have never qualified for a playoff spot and would love to break that streak this season. The Mustangs have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2018. Southeastern was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Mustangs want to be competitive. They only averaged 17.2 points a game. Southeastern struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 40.3 points a game. The Mustangs would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-16 record. Southeastern is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only six seasons. They have managed a record of 8-50 over the past six years. The Mustangs will be under the direction of new head football coach Kevin Byrd as they enter the 2018 season. The Southeastern Mustangs will play in Class 2A region five during the 2018 season. The Mustangs move up in classification to Class 2A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move. This season, the Mustangs will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region five. The Mustangs open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Appalachian on Thursday, August 23 at James E. Carr Stadium. Last year the Appalachian Eagles finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in seventh place in Class 1A region four. Southeastern and Appalachian have met a total of 11 times on the football field. The Mustangs have a 5-6-0 record against the Eagles. They last met in 2017 with Appalachian winning by a score of 21-12. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
