 2018 Preview 


       Southern Academy finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. With their 3-2 region record and a third place finish in Class A region two, the Cougars earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Southern Academy's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Crenshaw Christian by a score of 20-8.

       Since 2010, the Southern Academy football program has struggled with a record of 24-59.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Southern Academy has managed to compile a record of 165-103. Their 62.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class A and 10th in the AISA. Their last winning season was 2009.




       The Cougars are led by head coach Mike Smith who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 7-14 over the past two seasons at Southern Academy. Under his direction the Cougars have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Smith.

       Coach Smith's overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 7-14 (33.3%).

       The Southern Academy Cougars will play in Class A region two during the 2018 season.

       The Cougars will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region two this season.

       The Cougars open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Patrician Academy on Friday, August 24 at Hannah-Hesselman Field. Last year the Patrician Academy Saints finished with an overall record of 9-4 and in first place in Class A region two. The Saints won the Class A State Championship last season when they defeated Chambers Academy by a score of 22-20 in Troy.

       Southern Academy and Patrician Academy have met a total of 39 times on the football field. The Cougars have a 12-27-0 record against the Saints. They last met in 2017 with Patrician Academy winning by a score of 28-0.
