2018 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Sweet Water completed the 2017 season with a 13-1 record. Last year Sweet Water captured the region one title and a number one seed in the Class 1A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. The Bulldogs reeled off five straight playoff wins to claim the Class 1A State Championship by defeating Pickens County at the Alabama Super Seven 20-6 in Auburn. The Bulldogs won as many games as in any season since 2008. The defense was very stingy last season as Sweet Water ranked 18th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 10.9 points a game. Over the past two seasons the Bulldogs have gone 22-4 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Sweet Water has gone a combined 78-28. Their 74.0% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 1A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Sweet Water has gone a combined 205-92. Their 69.0% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class 1A and 37th in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs are led by head coach Pat Thompson who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 35-14 over the past four seasons at Sweet Water. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have won one region crown with Coach Thompson. Coach Thompson led Sweet Water to a state championship in 2017. Coach Thompson's overall record as a head football coach in four season stands at 35-14 (71.4%). The Sweet Water Bulldogs will play in Class 1A region one during the 2018 season. The Bulldogs enter the 2018 season riding a 13 game winning streak. They have also won 8 consecutive regular season games. Sweet Water has won 12 consecutive region games. They have won 6 straight games on their home turf at Nolan Atkins Stadium. The Bulldogs enter the season with expectations of not only a region title but reaching the state championship game. They are considered one the favorites in region one and should be a team in the thick of the hunt to represent the South in the Class 1A Super Seven come December. The Bulldogs have succeeded in reaching the playoffs every year since 2000 and this year should be no exception. The Bulldogs open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Thomasville on Friday, August 31 at Anderson Field. Last year the Thomasville Tigers finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in third place in Class 4A region one. The Tigers lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Tallassee by a score of 35-32. Sweet Water and Thomasville have met a total of 79 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 14-64-1 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2017 with Thomasville winning by a score of 36-15. Sweet Water returns 1A All-State linebacker Jacory Brown. He was named to the second team last season. The Bulldogs also return defensive lineman Willie Lewis. He was named to the second team. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
