Tuscaloosa Academy completed the 2017 season with a 8-2 record. Last year Tuscaloosa Academy captured the region one title and a number one seed in the Class AAA playoffs. They finished region play with a 5-0 record. Last year Tuscaloosa Academy reached the semi-finals before falling to a very good Bessemer Academy team by the score of 23-20. The Knights hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Johnson saw improvement as they won eight games following a 3-6 record in 2016. Since 2010, Tuscaloosa Academy has gone a combined 58-29. Their 67.0% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class AAA over the past eight seasons. Over the past 24 seasons, Tuscaloosa Academy has managed to compile a record of 124-127. Their 49.0% winning percentage ranks 9th in Class AAA and 24th in the AISA. The Knights are led by head coach Robert Johnson who is entering his eighth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 55-21 over the past seven seasons at Tuscaloosa Academy. Last year the Escambia Academy Cougars finished with an overall record of 12-1 and in second place in Class AA region two. The Cougars won the Class AA State Championship last season when they defeated Autauga Academy by a score of 30-20 in Troy. Tuscaloosa Academy and Escambia Academy have met a total of 7 times on the football field. The Knights have a 4-3-0 record against the Cougars. They last met in 2013 with Escambia Academy winning by a score of 41-27. Tuscaloosa Academy returns AISA All-State running back Cameron Chambers. He was named to the second team last season. The Knights also return kicker Drew Scharfenberg. He was named to the second team. The Knights also return linebacker JP Sanders. He was named to the second team.
