2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Verbena finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year Verbena finished seventh in Class 2A region four with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Red Devils lost as many games as in any season since 2001. The Red Devils hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they did not win a game which followed a 6-5 record in 2016. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Verbena averaged scoring just 9.0 points a game. The Red Devils also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 40.6 points a game. Since 2010, Verbena has gone a combined 26-57. Their 31.0% winning percentage ranks 46th in Class 1A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Verbena has managed to compile a record of 102-152. Their 40.0% winning percentage ranks 38th in Class 1A and 283rd in the AHSAA. The Red Devils are led by head coach Tyler Kelley who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 0-10 record in his first season at Verbena. The Red Devils have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Kelley. The Verbena Red Devils will play in Class 1A region four during the 2018 season. The Red Devils may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 2A to 1A. They will compete in region four this year. The Red Devils have one of the toughest schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 54-36 last season. That ranks 2nd in Class 1A and 32nd in the AHSAA. The Red Devils enter the 2018 season in the middle of a 11 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Red Devils will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region four. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at Verbena will be to simply win some games. The Red Devils open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Thorsby on Friday, August 31 at Red Devil Stadium. Last year the Thorsby Rebels finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in second place in Class 2A region four. The Rebels lost in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs to Goshen by a score of 42-8. Verbena and Thorsby have met a total of 51 times on the football field. The Red Devils have a 32-19-0 record against the Rebels. They last met in 2017 with Thorsby winning by a score of 48-0. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
