2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Williamson completed the 2017 season with a 7-4 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 5A region one, the Lions earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Williamson's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Demopolis by a score of 21-0. The Lions improved in 2017 with their first winning season since 2008. The Lions won as many games as in any season since 2007. The defense was very stingy last season as Williamson ranked 10th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 10.3 points a game. Williamson was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Lions want to be competitive. They only averaged 17.8 points a game. Since 2010, Williamson has gone a combined 27-55. Their 33.0% winning percentage ranks 42nd in Class 4A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Williamson has managed to compile a record of 137-125. Their 52.0% winning percentage ranks 21st in Class 4A and 159th in the AHSAA. The Lions are led by head coach Dedrick Sumpter who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 20-42 over the past six seasons at Williamson. Under his direction the Lions have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Sumpter. Coach Sumpter's overall record as a head football coach in six season stands at 20-42 (32.3%). The Williamson Lions will play in Class 4A region one during the 2018 season. The Lions may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 5A to 4A. They will compete in region one this year. The Lions have one of the toughest schedules in Class 4A. Their opponents had a combined record of 74-49 last season. That ranks 7th in Class 4A and 33rd in the AHSAA. Williamson will face six opponents that reached the playoffs last season. Region one will be one of the most competitive regions in any classification this season. With a little luck and some improvement, the Lions could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region one this season. Unfortunately, Williamson plays in a region with the likes of Andalusia, Clarke County, Hillcrest Evergreen and UMS-Wright making it more difficult to claim one of the four playoff spots. The Lions will need to find a way to upset one of those teams and win another three region games to have any chance at the post season. The Lions open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent LeFlore on Friday, August 31 at Prichard Stadium. Last year the LeFlore Rattlers finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in sixth place in Class 6A region one. The Rattlers closed out the regular season with a loss to Spanish Fort by a score of 56-20. Williamson and LeFlore have met a total of 57 times on the football field. The Lions have a 36-20-1 record against the Rattlers. They last met in 2017 with Williamson winning by a score of 19-6. Williamson returns 5A All-State defensive lineman Jeremiah Hickbottom. He was named to the second team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
