2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Billingsley finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Billingsley finished sixth in Class 2A region four with a 2-4 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Bears lost as many games as in any season since 2010. Billingsley struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 35.7 points a game. Since 2010, Billingsley has gone a combined 49-39. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 19th in Class 1A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Billingsley has managed to compile a record of 149-121. Their 55.0% winning percentage ranks 15th in Class 1A and 143rd in the AHSAA. The Bears will be under the direction of new head football coach Marvin Morton as they enter the 2018 season. The Billingsley Bears will play in Class 1A region four during the 2018 season. The Bears may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 2A to 1A. They will compete in region four this year. The Bears have one of the toughest schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 63-50 last season. That ranks 9th in Class 1A and 87th in the AHSAA. The Bears should be in contention for a playoff spot in region four this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game. Billingsley came up short of the playoffs the past couple of seasons but hope to return to the post season this year. The Bears open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Keith on Friday, August 24 at J.V. Caldwell Stadium. Last year the Keith Bears finished with an overall record of 6-5 and in third place in Class 2A region four. The Bears lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs to Abbeville by a score of 16-12. Billingsley and Keith have met a total of 11 times on the football field. The Bears have a 5-6-0 record against the Bears. They last met in 2017 with Keith winning by a score of 42-36. Billingsley returns 2A All-State athlete Malik Callens. He was named to the second team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
