 2018 Preview

Headland finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Headland finished seventh in Class 5A region two with a 0-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Rams lost as many games as in any season since 2007. The Rams have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2011 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Rams last playoff victory came during the 1988 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Headland averaged scoring just 10.8 points a game.

The Rams would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-16 record. Since 2010, Headland has gone a combined 27-54. Their 33.0% winning percentage ranks 43rd in Class 4A over the past eight seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Headland has not won much with a record of 74-170. Their 30.0% winning percentage ranks 50th in Class 4A and 339th in the AHSAA. The Rams have struggled on the football field with only four winning seasons during this time.

The Rams are led by head coach Danny Raines who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 1-9 record in his first season at Headland. The Rams have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Raines.

Coach Raines' overall record as a head football coach in fifteen season stands at 103-68 (60.2%). His 103 wins rank 58th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Raines' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twelve times and won one region championship.

The Headland Rams will play in Class 4A region two during the 2018 season. The Rams may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 5A to 4A. They will compete in region two this year.

The Rams enter the 2018 season in the middle of a 8 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season.

This season, the Rams will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region two.

The Rams open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Straughn on Friday, August 24 at Antioch Municipal Stadium. Last year the Straughn Tigers finished with an overall record of 1-8 and in seventh place in Class 3A region two. The Tigers closed out the regular season with a loss to Andalusia by a score of 34-7.

Headland and Straughn have met a total of 12 times on the football field. The Rams have a 5-7-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2015 with Straughn winning by a score of 25-14.
