2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Holy Spirit completed the 2017 season with a 4-7 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 1A region five, the Saints earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Holy Spirit's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Lynn by a score of 22-14. The Saints won as many games as in any season since 2010. It marked the first time since the 2009 season that the Saints qualified for the playoffs. The Saints have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2018. Since 2010, the Holy Spirit football program has struggled with a record of 14-66. Over the past 14 seasons, Holy Spirit has not won much with a record of 49-93. Their 34.0% winning percentage ranks 47th in Class 1A and 319th in the AHSAA. The Saints have struggled on the football field with only four winning seasons during this time. Their last winning season was 2008. The Saints are led by head coach Mark Cochran who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 4-7 record in his first season at Holy Spirit. The Saints saw improvement from a 2-8 record the season before coach Cochran arrived. Under his direction the Saints have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Cochran. Coach Cochran's overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 4-7 (36.4%). The Holy Spirit Saints will play in Class 1A region three during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Saints remain in 1A but move from region five over to region three. With a little luck and some improvement, the Saints could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region three this season. The Saints open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Autaugaville on Friday, August 24 at Arthur Howington Field. Last year the Autaugaville Eagles finished with an overall record of 2-7 and in sixth place in Class 1A region three. The Eagles closed out the regular season with a loss to R.C. Hatch by a score of 60-22. Holy Spirit and Autaugaville have met a total of 7 times on the football field. The Saints have a 3-4-0 record against the Eagles. They last met in 2013 with Autaugaville winning by a score of 68-6. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
