2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Houston Academy finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year Houston Academy finished eighth in Class 3A region two with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Houston Academy averaged scoring just 13.5 points a game. The Raiders would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 1-19 record. Since 2010, Houston Academy has gone a combined 36-44. Their 45.0% winning percentage ranks 35th in Class 3A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Houston Academy has managed to compile a record of 142-107. Their 57.0% winning percentage ranks 16th in Class 3A and 123rd in the AHSAA. The Raiders will be under the direction of new head football coach Jamie Riggs as they enter the 2018 season. Coach Riggs' overall record as a head football coach in thirty season stands at 305-81 (79.0%). His 305 wins rank 2nd among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Riggs' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-eight times and won fourteen region championships. He has a 69-24 record in the playoffs during his career. The playoff victories rank with the best among active coaches. Coach Riggs won four state championships prior to arriving at Houston Academy, the last coming in 2002 at . The Houston Academy Raiders will play in Class 3A region two during the 2018 season. The Raiders enter the 2018 season in the middle of a 19 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Raiders will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region two. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at Houston Academy will be to simply win some games. The Raiders open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent McKenzie on Friday, August 31 at Westgate Park. Last year the McKenzie Tigers finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in sixth place in Class 1A region two. Houston Academy and McKenzie have met a total of 8 times on the football field. The Raiders have a 3-5-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2003 with Houston Academy winning by a score of 39-0. Houston Academy returns 3A All-State punter Henry Beckett. He was named to the first team last season. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
