2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
J.F. Shields finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year J.F. Shields finished sixth in Class 1A region one with a 2-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Panthers won as many games as in any season since 2005. The Panthers have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2004 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Panthers last playoff victory came during the 2000 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. J.F. Shields was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Panthers want to be competitive. They only averaged 17.2 points a game. The Panthers would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Since 2010, the J.F. Shields football program has struggled with a record of 5-42. Over the past 22 seasons, J.F. Shields has not won much with a record of 57-151. Their 27.0% winning percentage ranks 54th in Class 1A and 354th in the AHSAA. Their last winning season was 2001. The Panthers are led by head coach Timothy Moorer who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 5-25 over the past three seasons at J.F. Shields. The Panthers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Moorer. Coach Moorer's overall record as a head football coach in three season stands at 5-25 (16.7%). The J.F. Shields Panthers will play in Class 1A region one during the 2018 season. With a little luck and some improvement, the Panthers could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region one this season. J.F. Shields has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2004 but hope to return to the post season this year. J.F. Shields simply does not have the numbers to be competitive on the football field at this time. With just 58 students, the Panthers are one of the smallest schools playing the game and have little chance of being successful. The Panthers open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Excel on Friday, August 24 at Panther Stadium. Last year the Excel Panthers finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in eighth place in Class 3A region one. The Panthers ended last season on a positive note with a win over Monroe County by a score of 34-16 after failing to gain a playoff spot. J.F. Shields and Excel have met a total of 14 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 1-13-0 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2007 with Excel winning by a score of 34-6. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
