 2018 Preview 


       Pickens Academy completed the 2017 season with a 6-4 record.

       Since 2010, Pickens Academy has gone a combined 48-40. Their 54.0% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class A over the past eight seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Pickens Academy has gone a combined 186-88. Their 68.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class A and 4th in the AISA. The Pirates have been successful on the football field with twenty-two winning seasons during this time.




       The Pirates are led by head coach Wade Goodman who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 11-9 over the past two seasons at Pickens Academy. The Pirates have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Goodman.

       Coach Goodman's overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 11-9 (55.0%).

       The Pickens Academy Pirates will play in Class A region two during the 2018 season. The Pirates may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class AA to A. They will compete in region two this year.

       With a little luck and some improvement, the Pirates could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region two this season. Unfortunately, Pickens Academy finds themselves in a very competitive region with other playoff quality teams. They may need to pull off an upset or two to have any shot at the postseason. Pickens Academy missed the playoffs the past couple of seasons but hope to return to the post season in 2018.

       The Pirates open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Coosa Valley Academy on Friday, August 24 at Don Greene/Rebels Stadium. Last year the Coosa Valley Academy Rebels finished with an overall record of 3-8 and in fifth place in Class AA region one. The Rebels closed out the regular season with a loss to Lowndes Academy by a score of 42-14.

       Pickens Academy and Coosa Valley Academy have met a total of 7 times on the football field. The Pirates have a 6-1-0 record against the Rebels. They last met in 2017 with Pickens Academy winning by a score of 42-6.

Morris Higginbotham coached three different teams to divisional state championships in the 1950s. He won titles at Walnut Grove in 1952, West Blocton in 1955 and Enterprise in 1960.
