 2018 Preview

Pickens County completed the 2017 season with a 12-3 record. Last year Pickens County captured the region five title and a number one seed in the Class 1A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. The Tornados won four consecutive playoff games to reach the Class 1A State Championship game only to fall just short of claiming a title. They were defeated by Sweet Water at the Alabama Super Seven 20-6 in Auburn.

The defense was very stingy last season as Pickens County ranked 13th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 10.7 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Tornados have gone 23-7 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Pickens County has gone a combined 82-25. Their 77.0% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class 1A over the past eight seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Pickens County has gone a combined 203-93. Their 69.0% winning percentage ranks 4th in Class 1A and 34th in the AHSAA. The Tornados have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 2004.

The Tornados will be under the direction of new head football coach Michael Williams as they enter the 2018 season.

The Pickens County Tornados will play in Class 1A region six during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Tornados remain in 1A but move from region five over to region six.

Pickens County enters the 2018 season with a string of 6 consecutive wins on their home field at G.S. Spruill Stadium.

The Tornados should be considered one of the favorites for the region six championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Don't be surprised if the Tornados are making another deep run into the playoffs. The Tornados have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2004 and expect to be included again when November rolls around.

The Tornados open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Marengo on Friday, August 24 at Panther Stadium. Last year the Marengo Panthers finished with an overall record of 9-4 and in third place in Class 1A region one. The Panthers lost in the quarter-finals round of the Class 1A playoffs to Wadley by a score of 34-20.

Pickens County and Marengo have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Tornados have a 1-1-0 record against the Panthers. They last met in with

Pickens County returns 1A All-State  quarterback AlJaron Edwards. He was named to the second team last season. The Tornados also return  linebacker Jaccaurian Washington. He was named to the first team. The Tornados also return  linebacker Xyron Giles. He was named to the second team.
