 2018 Preview

Ragland completed the 2017 season with a 5-6 record. With their 4-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 1A region four, the Purple Devils earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Ragland's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Brantley by a score of 20-19.

Since 2010, Ragland has gone a combined 67-27. Their 71.0% winning percentage ranks 8th in Class 1A over the past eight seasons.

Over the past 24 seasons, Ragland has managed to compile a record of 165-96. Their 63.0% winning percentage ranks 8th in Class 1A and 70th in the AHSAA.

The Purple Devils will be under the direction of new head football coach Derrick Sewell as they enter the 2018 season.

The Ragland Purple Devils will play in Class 1A region five during the 2018 season. Following realignment, the Purple Devils remain in 1A but move from region four over to region five.

The Purple Devils will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region five this season. They have qualified for the playoffs every year since 2000 and are hopeful to continue that streak in 2018.

The Purple Devils open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Ashville on Friday, August 24 at Joan Ford Stadium. Last year the Ashville Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fifth place in Class 4A region five. The Bulldogs ended last season on a positive note with a win over West End Walnut Grove by a score of 40-28 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

Ragland and Ashville have met a total of 33 times on the football field. The Purple Devils have a 6-27-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2017 with Ashville winning by a score of 33-32.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

In 1969 the two point conversion was adopted for play following a touchdown. Until that time all conversions were worth one point.
