2018 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Straughn finished the 2017 season with a disappointing 1-8 record. Last year Straughn finished seventh in Class 3A region two with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Tigers lost as many games as in any season since 2006. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Straughn averaged scoring just 6.8 points a game. Since 2010, Straughn has gone a combined 55-36. Their 60.0% winning percentage ranks 18th in Class 3A over the past eight seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Straughn has managed to compile a record of 162-109. Their 60.0% winning percentage ranks 12th in Class 3A and 99th in the AHSAA. The Tigers are led by head coach John Higgins who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 1-8 record in his first season at Straughn. The Tigers have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Higgins. Coach Higgins' overall record as a head football coach in three season stands at 6-23 (20.7%). The Straughn Tigers will play in Class 3A region two during the 2018 season. It will be an uphill battle for the Tigers if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region two this season. After just a single win last year, Straughn will be hopeful of winning a few more games this season. The Tigers open the 2018 season at home against non-region opponent Headland on Friday, August 24 at Antioch Municipal Stadium. Last year the Headland Rams finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in seventh place in Class 5A region two. The Rams closed out the regular season with a loss to Abbeville by a score of 28-18. Straughn and Headland have met a total of 12 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 7-5-0 record against the Rams. They last met in 2015 with Straughn winning by a score of 25-14. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
