2018 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Waterloo completed the 2017 season with a 4-6 record. With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 1A region eight, the Cougars earned a spot in the playoffs in 2017. Waterloo's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Cedar Bluff by a score of 33-28. It marked the first time since the 1992 season that the Cougars qualified for the playoffs. The Cougars have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2018. Since 2010, the Waterloo football program has struggled with a record of 14-66. Over the past 15 seasons, Waterloo has not won much with a record of 31-104. Their 23.0% winning percentage ranks 56th in Class 1A and 369th in the AHSAA. The Cougars have struggled on the football field with only three winning seasons during this time. The Cougars are led by head coach Brad Palmer who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 10-30 over the past four seasons at Waterloo. Under his direction the Cougars have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Palmer. Coach Palmer's overall record as a head football coach in four season stands at 10-30 (25.0%). The Waterloo Cougars will play in Class 1A region eight during the 2018 season. With a little luck and some improvement, the Cougars could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region eight this season. The Cougars open the 2018 season on the road against non-region opponent Woodville on Friday, August 24. Last year the Woodville Panthers finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fourth place in Class 1A region six. The Panthers lost in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs to Hackleburg by a score of 49-19. Waterloo and Woodville have met a total of 6 times on the football field. The Cougars have a 4-2-0 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2015 with Woodville winning by a score of 45-0. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
