2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Gulf Shores completed the 2022 season with a 11-2 record. With their 7-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 5A region one, the Dolphins earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Gulf Shores lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Faith Academy team by a score of 20-14. No team at Gulf Shores ever won more games in a season than the eleven victories last year. The 484 points scored by the Dolphins last year were a team record in a single season. It marked the first time since the 2013 season that the Dolphins qualified for the playoffs. The Dolphins hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Hudspeth saw improvement as they won eleven games following a 6-4 record in 2021. Since 2010, Gulf Shores has gone a combined 50-84. Their 37.3% winning percentage ranks 40th in Class 5A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 23 seasons, Gulf Shores has managed to compile a record of 86-149. Their 37.0% winning percentage ranks 45th in Class 5A and 309th in the AHSAA. The Dolphins are led by head coach Mark Hudspeth who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 17-6 over the past two seasons at Gulf Shores. Under his direction the Dolphins have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Hudspeth. Coach Hudspeth has his players believing in the system and the Dolphins will continue to be winners in a tough region in 5A. Their quarterback transferred to Foley so that will be the first assignment for Coach to find a replacement this fall. But a transfer from Millry at the quarterback position may be just the answer to that question. The Dolphins enter the 2023 season riding a 6 game regular season winning streak. The Dolphins should be in contention for a playoff spot in region one this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. All-purpose back Ronnie Royal will be back this season at running back after rushing for 1,147 yards and 24 TDs in 2022. Royal also gathered in 61 passes good for 876 yards and another 8 TDs. Braden Jackson will also return at cornerback. Placekicker Will Langston will return after scoring 72 points and knocking through five field goals last year. The Dolphins open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent St. Michael on Friday, August 25 at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium. Last year the St. Michael Cardinals finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in fifth place in Class 4A region one. Gulf Shores and St. Michael have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Dolphins have a 2-0-0 record against the Cardinals. They last met in 2022 with Gulf Shores winning by a score of 34-27. The Dolphins return 5A All-State Senior athlete Ronnie Royal. He was named to the first team last season. The Dolphins also return Senior punter Will Langston. He was named to the second team. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
