2023 Preview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
McKenzie finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 1-8 record. Last year McKenzie finished eighth in Class 1A region two with a 1-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Tigers hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just one game which followed a 6-4 record in 2021. McKenzie struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 38.7 points a game. Since 2010, McKenzie has gone a combined 70-65. Their 51.9% winning percentage ranks 25th in Class 1A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, McKenzie has managed to compile a record of 120-142. Their 46.0% winning percentage ranks 31st in Class 1A and 228th in the AHSAA. The Tigers will be under the direction of new head football coach Brian Bradford as they enter the 2023 season. Coach Bradford is a graduate of Stanhope Elmore. He spent 15 years at his alma mater, nine years as the offensive coordinator, and six years as the head coach. Over the course of his career, Coach Bradford's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times . This season, the Tigers will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region two. The Tigers open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Wilcox Central on Friday, August 25 at Williams-Vickery Field. Last year the Wilcox Central Jaguars finished with an overall record of 1-8 and in eighth place in Class 4A region one. The Jaguars ended last season on a positive note with a win over J.F. Shields by a score of 51-10 after failing to gain a playoff spot. McKenzie and Wilcox Central have met a total of 5 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 4-1-0 record against the Jaguars. They last met in 1952 with McKenzie winning by a score of 20-6. McKenzie lost 1A All-State running back Kamren Daniels to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season. The Tigers return 1A All-State Senior punter Jaylen McMillian. He was named to the first team last season. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
