South Lamar completed the 2022 season with a 5-6 record. With their 5-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 1A region five, the Stallions earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. South Lamar's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Spring Garden by a score of 35-7. It marked the first time since the 2019 season that the Stallions qualified for the playoffs. Since 2010, South Lamar has gone a combined 66-79. Their 45.5% winning percentage ranks 31st in Class 1A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, South Lamar has managed to compile a record of 140-140. Their 50.0% winning percentage ranks 24th in Class 1A and 185th in the AHSAA. The Stallions are led by head coach Clay Gilliam who is entering his eighth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 47-34 over the past seven seasons at South Lamar. Under his direction the Stallions have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times. They have won one region crown with Coach Gilliam. The Stallions have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region five this season. The Stallions open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Lamar County on Friday, August 25 at George Bell Stadium. Last year the Lamar County Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 5-6 and in fourth place in Class 2A region five. The Bulldogs lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs to Southeastern by a score of 16-7. South Lamar and Lamar County have met a total of 40 times on the football field. The Stallions have a 20-20-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2022 with Lamar County winning by a score of 42-26. The Stallions return 1A All-State Senior running back Charles Neal.
