With their 3-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 1A region one, the Indians earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Southern Choctaw's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Elba by a score of 42-20. It marked the first time since the 2018 season that the Indians qualified for the playoffs. Since 2010, Southern Choctaw has gone a combined 64-72. Their 61.0% winning percentage ranks 13th in Class 1A and 88th in the AHSAA. The Indians will be under the direction of new head football coach Larry Boykin as they enter the 2023 season. Coach Boykin returns to Southern Choctaw where he was the head football coach between 1994-2006. Under his direction the Indians won three state championships. Coach Boykin has won three state championships at Southern Choctaw, the last coming in 2002. His 161 wins rank 29th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Boykin's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seventeen times and won six region championships. The Indians have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 61-47 last season. That ranks 2nd in Class 1A and 69th in the AHSAA. The Indians could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region one this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. The Indians open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent J.U. Blacksher on Friday, September 1 at John M. Sawyer Memorial Stadium. Last year the J.U. Blacksher Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in second place in Class 2A region one. The Bulldogs lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs to Wicksburg by a score of 34-7. Southern Choctaw and J.U. Blacksher have met a total of 8 times on the football field. The Indians have a 4-4-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2022 with J.U.
