 2023 Preview 


       Wicksburg completed the 2022 season with a 6-6 record. With their 5-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 2A region two, the Panthers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Wicksburg reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to B.B. Comer by a score of 22-14.

       Since 2010, Wicksburg has gone a combined 70-68. Their 50.7% winning percentage ranks 26th in Class 2A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Wicksburg has managed to compile a record of 130-136. Their 49.0% winning percentage ranks 27th in Class 2A and 207th in the AHSAA.




       The Panthers are led by head coach Josh Cox who is entering his tenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 58-41 over the past nine seasons at Wicksburg. Under his direction the Panthers have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times. They have won one region crown with Coach Cox.

       The Panthers have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region two this season.

      Sophomore QB Mason Burkhardt will be returning after completing 44 of 73 passes for 804 yards last season along with 9 touchdowns.

      The defense will be led by Izaac Murry this season after collecting 86 total tackles last season.

       The Panthers open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Houston Academy on Friday, August 25 at Panther Stadium. Last year the Houston Academy Raiders finished with an overall record of 10-1 and in first place in Class 3A region two. The Raiders lost in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs to Mobile Christian by a score of 30-3.

       Wicksburg and Houston Academy have met a total of 48 times on the football field. The Panthers have a 21-27-0 record against the Raiders. They last met in 2022 with Houston Academy winning by a score of 28-0.

       Wicksburg lost 2A All-State  running back Jaylen Murry to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.
