2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Wilson finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Wilson finished seventh in Class 4A region seven with a 1-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The defense allowed a team record 393 points last season. Wilson was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Warriors want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.3 points a game. Wilson struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 39.3 points a game. The Warriors would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 2-18 record. Since 2010, Wilson has gone a combined 55-78. Their 41.4% winning percentage ranks 43rd in Class 4A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Wilson has managed to compile a record of 104-152. Their 41.0% winning percentage ranks 44th in Class 4A and 278th in the AHSAA. The Warriors will be under the direction of new head football coach Trey Lane as they enter the 2023 season. Coach Lane served as a teacher at Florence Middle School and an assistant football coach at Florence High School. Coach Lane hopes to turn around a program that won just five games the past four seasons. The Warriors will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region seven this season. After just a single win last year, Wilson will be hopeful of winning a few more games this season. The Warriors open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Hatton on Friday, August 25 at Ralph Thompson Stadium. Last year the Hatton Hornets finished with an overall record of 7-3 and in third place in Class 2A region eight. The Hornets lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs to Pisgah by a score of 40-20. Wilson and Hatton have met a total of 15 times on the football field. The Warriors have a 3-12-0 record against the Hornets. They last met in 2022 with Hatton winning by a score of 30-19. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
