2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Brilliant finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year Brilliant finished ninth in Class 1A region five with a 0-8 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Tigers lost as many games as in any season since 2016. The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Brilliant averaged scoring just 3.8 points a game. The Tigers also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 50.2 points a game. The Tigers would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 2-18 record. Since 2010, the Brilliant football program has struggled with a record of 32-103. Over the past 25 seasons, Brilliant has not won much with a record of 83-177. Their 32.0% winning percentage ranks 50th in Class 1A and 341st in the AHSAA. The Tigers will be under the direction of new head football coach Tanner Harris as they enter the 2023 season. Coach Harris gets his first head coaching job at Brilliant in 2023. He was an assistant at Daleville last season. The Tigers have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 58-53 last season. That ranks 7th in Class 1A and 157th in the AHSAA. The Tigers enter the 2023 season in the middle of a 12 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season. This season, the Tigers will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region five. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at Brilliant will be to simply win some games. Brilliant simply does not have the numbers to be competitive on the football field at this time. With just 68 students, the Tigers are one of the smallest schools playing the game and have little chance of being successful. The Tigers open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Waterloo on Friday, August 25 at Tiger Stadium. Last year the Waterloo Cougars finished with an overall record of 4-5 and in fifth place in Class 1A region eight. The Cougars ended last season on a positive note with a win over Vina by a score of 46-8 after failing to gain a playoff spot. Brilliant and Waterloo have met a total of 12 times on the football field. The Tigers have a 7-5-0 record against the Cougars. They last met in 2022 with Waterloo winning by a score of 53-8. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
