 2023 Preview 


       Hueytown completed the 2022 season with a 8-4 record. With their 6-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 6A region four, the Golden Gophers earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Hueytown reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Theodore by a score of 29-18.

       The Golden Gophers hope to get back closer to the 13-2 record in 2021.

       The high-scoring Hueytown offense ranked 7th in the AHSAA. They averaged 44.3 points a game.

       Over the past two seasons the Golden Gophers have Finished 21-6 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Hueytown has gone a combined 99-54. Their 64.7% winning percentage ranks 17th in Class 6A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Hueytown has managed to compile a record of 151-128. Their 54.0% winning percentage ranks 34th in Class 6A and 155th in the AHSAA.




       The Golden Gophers are led by head coach Greg Patterson. who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 37-14 over the past four seasons at Hueytown. Under his direction the Golden Gophers have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have won three region crowns with Coach Patterson.. Over the course of his career, Coach Patterson.'s teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times and won three region championships.

       The Golden Gophers enter the 2023 season riding a 6 game regular season winning streak.

       The Golden Gophers should be in contention for a playoff spot in region four this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. They have reached the playoffs every year since 2015 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2023.

      RB Jakhael Rowser will be returning to the offense in 2023.

       The Golden Gophers open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Ramsay on Friday, August 25 at Hueytown High School Stadium. Last year the Ramsay Rams finished with an overall record of 13-2 and in first place in Class 5A region five. The Rams won the Class 5A State Championship last season when they defeated Charles Henderson by a score of 41-20 in the Super Seven finals in Auburn.

       Hueytown and Ramsay have met a total of 9 times on the football field. The Golden Gophers have a 3-6-0 record against the Rams. They last met in 2022 with Ramsay winning by a score of 41-28.

       Hueytown lost 6A All-State  athlete Earl Woods to graduation. He was named to the first team last season.

       The Golden Gophers return 6A All-State Senior running back Jakhael Rowser. He was named to the second team last season.

The Tuscaloosa Black Bears were considered one of the best programs in the nation from 1925-1931. Their record over that span was an amazing 61-0-3.
