2023 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Maplesville completed the 2022 season with a 8-4 record. Last year Maplesville captured the region four title and a number one seed in the Class 1A playoffs. They finished region play with a 7-0 record. Maplesville reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Leroy by a score of 33-8. The Red Devils lost as many games as in any season since 2008. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Maplesville has gone a combined 150-21. Their 87.7% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 1A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Maplesville has finished a combined 254-64. Their 80.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 1A and 5th in the AHSAA. The Red Devils have been successful on the football field with twenty-three winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 2004. The Red Devils are led by head coach Brad Abbott who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 37-12 over the past four seasons at Maplesville. Under his direction the Red Devils have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have won three region crowns with Coach Abbott. Over the course of his career, Coach Abbott's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of eleven times and won three region championships. The Red Devils should be in contention for a playoff spot in region four this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. They have reached the playoffs every year since 2003 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2023. The Red Devils open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Meek on Friday, August 25 at Red Devil Stadium. Last year the Meek Tigers finished with an overall record of 11-1 and in first place in Class 1A region eight. The Tigers lost in the second round of the Class 1A playoffs to Pickens County by a score of 44-36. Maplesville and Meek have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Red Devils have a 0-2-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2022 with Meek winning by a score of 36-12. Maplesville lost 1A All-State defensive back Jakavion Jackson to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating was teammate defensive back Payton Cook. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
