Montgomery Academy completed the 2022 season with a 5-6 record. With their 4-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 4A region two, the Eagles earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Montgomery Academy's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to T.R. Miller by a score of 41-13. Montgomery Academy took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2012. The Eagles lost as many games as in any season since 2012. The Eagles hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just five games which followed a 11-4 record in 2021. Since 2010, Montgomery Academy has gone a combined 99-54. Their 64.7% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 4A over the past thirteen seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Montgomery Academy has managed to compile a record of 193-101. Their 66.0% winning percentage ranks 8th in Class 4A and 62nd in the AHSAA. The Eagles will be under the direction of new head football coach Ethan McBride as they enter the 2023 season. Coach McBride has been the Defensive Coordinator for the Eagles since 2020, will continue to teach in the classroom and remain as Head Track and Field Coach. The Eagles have one of the toughest schedules in all the state. Their non-region opponents finished 30-9 last season. The Eagles have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 4A. Their opponents had a combined record of 77-43 last season. That ranks 1st in Class 4A and 3rd in the AHSAA. The Eagles have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region two this season. They have qualified for the playoffs every year since 2012 and are hopeful to continue that streak in 2023. Receiver D.J. Vinson will return after grabbing 34 passes good for 738 yards and 5 TDs as a sophomore last season. The Eagles open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent St. James on Friday, August 25 at Carlisle Field. Last year the St. James Trojans finished with an overall record of 13-2 and in first place in Class 3A region three. The Trojans won the Class 3A State Championship last season when they defeated Piedmont by a score of 45-28 in the Super Seven finals in Auburn. Montgomery Academy and St. James have met a total of 50 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 29-21-0 record against the Trojans. They last met in 2022 with St. James winning by a score of 42-14. Montgomery Academy lost 4A All-State linebacker Jashawn Cooper to graduation. He was named to the first team last season.
